The Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum: Early Excavations and Recent Discoveries
This lecture presents a preview of a major loan exhibition that will open at the Getty Villa on June 26, offering some behind-the-scenes insights into the development and execution of the project. In addition to a brief history of the early excavations of the Villa dei Papiri in the 1750s, the speaker also examines new discoveries from recent explorations at the site and through current scholarly research.
Life in an Aristocratic Roman Villa—As Witnessed by the Bronze and Marble Furnishings of the Villa dei Papiri
A great deal is known about the life of the Roman elite in the age of Cicero—roughly when the Villa dei Papiri was constructed (ca. 50 BC). But arguably the best guide to the lifestyle they wished to enjoy is the architecture and the expensive furnishings with which they chose to surround themselves in their luxurious villas and country houses. In this lecture, the bronze and marble objects surviving from the Villa dei Papiri are employed to help reconstruct that lifestyle of its former owners, and to evoke something of their ideals, priorities, and self-image.
