The legend of Oedipus sees fate, hubris, and the will of the gods collide with shattering results, providing the foundation for the most influential of all Greek tragedies. This presentation will explore the cultural significance of the Theban plays (Antigone, Oedipus Tyrannos, and Oedipus at Colonus) by Sophocles through the lens of art, beginning with their representations in ancient Greek vase-painting.
The lecture will be followed by a conversation between the speaker and Carey Perloff, artistic director emerita, American Conservatory Theater.
This program will introduce the Ancient Art Council's annual Saturnalia celebration: a rehearsed reading of Sophocles' last play, Oedipus at Colonus, on 4 December.
