In the 1880s, 16 portraits found deep underground were spirited away from a Roman building site. The sculptures—of exceptional quality—were made for one of Rome’s most famous families, prominent under the emperors Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius. This talk will trace the journey these portraits take from Rome to Paris to Copenhagen, the colorful characters involved, and what these ancient faces—long ignored—have to tell us today.
