The Munich Doryphoros: Venerated—Suppressed—Forgotten

Date: Saturday, April 28, 2018 - 2:00pm
Location: John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn Theater, Legion of Honor
Presented by: Prof. Rolf Schneider, Institute for Classical Archaeology, Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich

This lecture discusses the making and reception of Munich’s bronze reconstruction of Polykleitos’s famous Doryphoros (Spear Bearer). An exceptional piece of sculpture, the statue is represented as the reconstruction of the lost bronze original statue made by Polykleitos (ca. 440 BC). At the same time, it served—unknown by most—as the
main decoration of a war memorial from 1921 to 1944. The memorial was (accidentally) destroyed in World War II (by US bombs), while the sculpture miraculously survived
but its memorial context was conveniently forgotten.
